Stage 1:
Startup Ideation

Converting your business idea into a motivating vision is the first step to making it real.

To move your new business forward, you'll need to convince others that your startup is likely to succeed.

Purpose

Describe your business idea as a story that will inspire others.

Steps

  1. Clarify your business idea.

  2. Test your vision on others.

  3. Review, then either:

    • Progress as is

    • Refine

    • Find another idea.

Target

A compelling startup vision you can hold as your guiding light, and share with others to enthuse and motivate them as you build your new business.

Describe Your Vision

Describe your business idea as a startup vision that inspires others.

Tell your idea as a vision story that:

  • Describes a clear vision of the future.

  • Inspires other people.

  • Refines your thinking.

  • Acts as a guiding light for you.

Test Your Vision

Test your startup vision on others. Practice inspiring others with your vision story.

Encourage honest feedback. Ask for strengths and weaknesses in your idea and story.

Record all comments.

Rework Your Vision

From the feedback you've received, is there anything you can do to improve your vision story, or your business idea?

Refine your idea, vision, and how you tell the story.

If your changes are major, go back and test your story again.

Decide: Is Your Business Idea Golden?

How has your vision gone down?

If it hasn't been well received by your audience, decide if the story is badly told, or if your idea is just not strong enough to invest time and money in.

Make a conscious decision: To go forward, or go back to the drawing board.

If you commit to going on, head to Business Plan, the next Framework stage, where you design a business based on your vision.

Starting again is not a failure, it's an opportunity to try something else while you still have energy and resources to spare.
